Full-colour printing with no setup and no minimum

What DTG is good at

Think of it as a very large, very precise inkjet printer that prints onto fabric instead of paper. Because there are no screens, complexity is free: a full-colour illustration costs the same to print as a single-colour logo, and a run of one costs the same per piece as a run of ten.

• Small runs. Sample garments, one-off gifts, five shirts for a stand.
• Complex artwork. Photos, painted illustrations, gradients, fine detail.
• Soft handle. The ink sits in the fibres, not as a layer on top.
• Print-on-demand. Useful for brands testing designs before committing to a run.

The honest limitations

DTG needs cotton. It works beautifully on 100% cotton and well on high-cotton blends, but polyester and technical fabrics won’t hold the ink properly — for those we’d use vinyl or transfer. Dark garments need a white underbase, which costs a little more and slightly stiffens the print area. And at high volumes, screen printing will always undercut it.

Digital print is priced per garment, and the price comes down with quantity. Dark garments cost a little more than light ones because they need a white underbase. Tell us the garment, the print size and how many you need, and we’ll give you a fixed price — and say so if screen printing would work out cheaper for your run.

• PNG with a transparent background beats a JPEG with a white box behind it
• Very light or neon colours print softer on dark fabric than they look on screen
